WILL Cameron has been turning heads, and that’s not just because he plays tennis.

Local tennis prodigy Will Cameron will be performing at the Brisbane Tennis Centre as a part of the Queensland School Boys Northern Under 12 tennis team.

Will said he was invited to play as a part of the northern team, mostly from Townsville as there is no specific northwest team.

This is no mean feat for a young man who lives in between Longreach and Barcaldine and travels long distances to play.

“I’ve been playing tennis since I was about two or three, just hitting balls and stuff,” he said.

“When I was about six or seven, I started doing junior teaching in Barcaldine at the tennis club with the Walsh family.

“That was very good, and I got some great skills there.”

When Will started attending competition and social tennis events in Barcaldine, he started to hone his talents.

“Due to the lack of competitions in tennis out here, I haven’t been able to play representative tennis, so this will be my first time,” he said.

This year, Will will be playing against the best players in Queensland.

“It will be good competition,” he said.

“I will definitely have a good try [at winning].

“I will definitely fight really hard and try and do the outback proud.”

Will said he really liked to play sports and hoped his future would be in professional sports.

“I like cricket as well, and I will be playing at state level there this year as well,” he said.

“There is a good chance that I will do that [become a professional athlete], but who knows.”

Will thanked all the people who have helped him, including the Walsh family who supported him.
